Glue-Down Installation

Glue-down installation — also called fully adhered installation — is the method of securing flooring directly to the substrate using a pressure-sensitive or hard-set adhesive. It is the dominant installation method for commercial flooring applications involving LVT, VCT, rubber flooring, carpet tile, and sheet vinyl. In commercial environments, glue-down installation is preferred over floating because it eliminates movement, reduces hollow sound, and improves long-term dimensional stability under rolling loads.

Adhesive Types

The correct adhesive depends on the flooring product, substrate type, and environmental conditions. Common commercial adhesive categories include:

• Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA): Remains tacky after drying; used for carpet tile and some LVT; allows repositioning
• Hard-set adhesive: Cures to a rigid bond; used for VCT, rubber, and some resilient products; no repositioning after set
• Epoxy adhesive: Two-component system; used in chemical-resistant or high-moisture applications
• Moisture-tolerant adhesive: Formulated to perform over substrates with elevated moisture vapor emissions

Open Time and Working Time

Two adhesive timing concepts are critical to glue-down installation: open time (how long after application the adhesive remains bondable) and working time (how long after initial set you can still reposition flooring). These parameters vary by adhesive type, ambient temperature, and substrate porosity. Applying flooring too early (before the adhesive reaches proper tack) or too late (after it has skinned over) results in bond failure.

Substrate Requirements

Glue-down installation places strict demands on the substrate. Concrete must be clean, sound, and dry — with moisture vapor emissions within the adhesive manufacturer's specified limits. High spots must be ground flat and low areas filled, as adhesive cannot bridge gaps. Contamination from curing compounds, sealers, or oils must be removed before adhesive application.
